Follow the Royal Footsteps

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is recognized as Pho Lauang, or royal father. He has spent his life working for the betterment of his people and has devoted himself to the development of Thailand.  He has sought to strengthen local communities by creating sustainable economic and social initiatives.

In the wake of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, great attention was given to the study of sustainability.  King Bhumibol has urged his people to follow a philosophy entitled the “Sufficiency Economy”, which touches on many different aspects of daily life. His economic and social ideas chart a sustainable path forward for Thailand.

The principles of the “Sufficiency Economy” seek to engage the Thai public by persuading the individual to change his habits for the betterment of his community. It means living a simple life and being pious. It encourages people to talk and resolve disputes through innovation and dialogue.

An excerpt from H.M. the King’s speech at Kasetsart University’s Commencement Ceremony on 19 July 1974,  “….…The development of the country must be fostered in stages. It must start with the construction of infrastructure, that is, the provision of food and basic necessities for the people by methods, which are economic, cautious and conforming with principles. Once the foundation is firmly established, progress can be continually, carefully and economically promoted. This approach will prevent recurring mistakes and failures, and lead to the certain and complete achievement of the objectives…”
